Learn the basics of studio lighting in a relaxed, hands-on environment. We’ll cover light stands and modifiers, flash and camera settings, light placement, metering, and how to build a simple lighting setup from start to finish.

You’ll then put it all together by working with a model, practicing posing and communication, and creating your own lighting setup. Bring your camera—you’ll shoot during the workshop and take your images home with you.

No studio lighting experience required.

Bring your camera and a lens you’re comfortable using. Any of the following are great choices:

• 70–200mm
• 50mm
• 85mm
• 24–105mm

You do not need to own a specific lens or professional camera. Bring what you have—we’ll work with your equipment.

Please also bring a fully charged battery and an empty memory card so you’re ready to shoot.

This 5-hour Studio Lighting Basics Workshop is designed to take you from understanding the fundamentals of studio lighting to actually creating and photographing your own lighting setup.

We’ll begin in the classroom with the basics—how to safely set up light stands, understanding different types of modifiers, light placement, flash power, metering, and how each light contributes to the final image.

Then we’ll move into the studio and put everything into practice.

A model will be provided, giving you the opportunity to work through an actual portrait session. You’ll learn how to build a lighting setup, communicate with and pose your subject, make adjustments, and see firsthand how those changes affect your photographs.

Bring Your Own Camera

Bring your camera and a lens you’re comfortable using. A 50mm, 85mm, 24–105mm or 70–200mm will work great.

We have Profoto flash transmitters for most major camera systems, including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus and Panasonic, along with a manual single-point option for many other cameras.

You’ll shoot with your own camera and memory card, which means the photographs you create during the workshop go home with you and can be used to begin or expand your portfolio.

A Little Camera Knowledge Is Required

No previous studio lighting experience is required. However, students must know how to put their camera into Manual (M) mode and make basic adjustments to shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

You don’t need to be an expert—we’ll help you along the way. You simply need to know how to access and change these basic settings on your camera.

Hands-On Learning

This is not a workshop where you’ll spend five hours sitting and watching someone else work. You’ll actually work with the lights, modifiers and model yourself.

You’ll have the opportunity to build a lighting setup, experiment, ask questions, make adjustments and see the results through your own camera.

The workshop runs approximately 5 hours and includes two 20-minute breaks.

Class size is limited to only 6 photographers, giving everyone plenty of individual attention and hands-on shooting time.

These are relaxed, hands-on private lessons, not lectures. Bring your camera for photography instruction or your images for Photoshop instruction, and we’ll spend the hour working on the things that matter most to you.
